Most people don’t realize that both traditional and MMA gyms in Long Island vary dramatically. Some MMA gyms are only for those serious enough to compete, others are more like spas with MMA as an afterthought. Neither of those extremes provide the diversity necessary to address many people’s needs. To be a great MMA gym, you need a blend of traditional fitness wisdom with MMA training.
Traditional fitness wisdom includes healthy eating and good nutrition.
No matter what your sport or fitness goal, healthy eating is a must. Healthy eating isn’t dieting, but rather learning how to make the smartest choices when it comes to the food you eat. It doesn’t demand you eat Brussels sprouts if the thought of eating them makes you physically ill. Instead, it provides information on how choosing one food over another may not affect your palate but can increase nutrients and cut calories. Substitutions such as eating brown rice instead of white or using Greek yogurt instead of sour cream on a baked potato are examples.
MMA champions don’t waddle.
Losing weight is a battle that people of all types often wage. It isn’t just women or just men. Obesity not only increases the risk of serious diseases, but it also limits mobility. That’s why MMA training is complete training. It focuses on healthy eating and exercise for weight loss, so you can be a champion. That type of attitude is also good for the person who just wants to get fit. In fact, for those people, adding MMA to their weight loss program can help boost their progress to a thinner version of themselves.
Finding a gym that has instructors that are versed in high level Muay Thai instruction is rare.
If you’re looking for a gym that will help you reach your potential in martial arts and Muay Thai, find one that has an instructor that has received the title of Arjarn from at least on Muay Thai Grand Master. A good gym will also have a female instructor to meet the needs of women, including those desiring focused training in Muay Thai and MMA, those who want to learn self-defense and those desiring the lean sculpted body that Muay Thai and MMA can provide.
- Look for a gym that’s family friendly. How can you tell? Those types of gyms have classes for men, women and children. The whole family can get fit and share a common love.
- Some gyms provide training in both Muay Thai and Muay Boran. If you find one, you’re lucky. Muay Boran is traditional Muay Thai before all the rules and regulations were put into place.
- If you don’t ever want to fight in the ring, but love the svelte appearance of Muay Thai fighters, find a gym that offers sessions designed specifically to help you get fit, rather than get ring ready. You can always switch to traditional Muay Thai when you have more experience.
- Find a gym that also focuses on using the discipline of Muay Thai to develop leadership and character. The biggest fight most children face is the fight for self-control, respect for others and self-discipline.
I want to extend a huge Thank You to Master Anthony Garcia. Getting to and maintaining a healthy weight is a lifelong struggle for me. With the help of Master Garcia, I have been able to get to where I am. For the first time in my life, my body fat is 10%. I’m stronger than I have ever been. He has continued to guide me through the years and tweak my diet and exercise routines. I could not have done this without him. If you haven’t already had a nutritional consult, now is the time!
UPDATE: It has now been over 2 years since I sent in the previous testimonial. Thanks to Master Garcia’s continued nurturing, training and nutritional advice, I have been able to maintain weight loss. To all my friends who are struggling to lose the weight, I continue to encourage them and remind them that the battle truly begins when you reach your goal. Maintaining my weight has been and will continue to be a lifelong struggle. Master Garcia continues to tweak my diet and give me positive reinforcement and gentle reminders to stay on track. I am now 44 years old and my weight has remained at 135. I am still seeing great changes in my body. My body fat is down to 10%! Never would I have believed that this could happen. I feel strong and powerful. Since I’ve trained with Master Garcia, I have accomplished so many other fitness goals as well. Last year I ran all 3 Spartan Races and completed my Trifecta. I never would have dreamed that I could run 14 miles through rough terrain and conquer huge obstacles such as scaling walls and crawling under barbed wire through the mud! Master Garcia has made me into the best woman I can be!
I just want to give a HUGE thank you to Master Garcia at Garcia Muay Thai for his guidance, knowledge, leadership, wisdom, and absolute passion and belief in all of his students, including myself!!! He has truly introduced me to a new and profound way to live a better and healthier life and has now helped create a drive in passion for both the art of Muay Thai and Fitness. Because that I was able to achieve immediate set goals I had in merely 2months. With the lost of 35 lbs and significant muscle gain, I can now see with complete confidence future goals I have before me becoming a reality and can not be more happier. I have higher confidence in myself and a great sense of peace. It’s easy to go to schools and gain knowledge in The Martial Art and in Fitness, but the right kind of knowledge and atmosphere is so important. So thank you Master Garcia and Garcia Fight Team for making it that way and maintaining it. I am truly grateful.
I’ve struggled with my weight for the majority of my adult life as well as when I was a child and teen. As a sales professional, I became comfortable living a sedentary lifestyle. I was a drinker and a smoker. Part of my job was to entertain clients which had me eating out a few times a week. At one point I was tipping the scales at just north of 240 lbs. As a result, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Even though I was doing a decent job managing my disease, I still suffered a heart attack at the ripe old age of 43. I rushed to the hospital (thank God I live a few blocks away) and long story short I received 5 stents. This is where Master Tony Garcia and Garcia Muay Thai come into the picture. The day I left the hospital I drove to the gym and joined. I was always intrigued and wanted to learn a martial art in addition to needing a cardio-centric workout that would get me in shape. Master Garcia took the time to talk about my condition as well as my goals and we put together a plan. Through conditioning classes my overall fitness improved dramatically. But as stated before I wasn’t only interested in getting in shape; I wanted to learn the art of Muay Thai. Through private sessions and Master Garcia’s Fighter Course I’ve learned a ton and participate in sparring sessions weekly. At our gym, sparring sessions aren’t intimidating; everyone at every level helps in each others development. Egos are checked at the door. We are a true team.
Master Garcia’s genuine interest in the health, well being and specific goals of each of his students is second to none. He has created a learning environment that can be tailored to fit each individual. He is one of a handful non-Thai Masters teaching this ancient art in the US right in our backyard. As a result of studying with Arjan Garcia and adopting a low carbohydrate diet, I currently weight 175 lbs. In fact, my Endocrinologist has reduced medications to 25% of what I was taking to manage my diabetes while hospitalized. Master Garcia and the Gym as well as the learning environment he created is a major factor I attribute to being in the best shape of my life.
About four years ago I found Garcia Muay Thai gym. I was nineteen and severely depressed. I was scared as well. I was scared that someone would attack me and I wouldn’t know how to defend myself. Carrying a weapon was no choice. I don’t think I can ever live with myself if I was to stab someone or shoot someone. My father actually found a voucher online for Garcia Muay Thai and bought me sessions. It took me weeks before I actually made my way there. I was depressed and felt small of a being, in a sense I felt lost and undeserving of happiness. I remember walking into the gym and being the only female and the youngest and smallest one there! I thought I was in the wrong place. Man, was I wrong. I was exactly where I needed to be. Since it was my first time doing any kind of martial arts, Master Garcia worked with me at my own pace. He showed me the basics and fundamentals. He guided me through and pushed me to my potential each and every day I went. Not only did I feel empowered but, with each training completed, I felt this natural high of bliss. I was no longer scared of the thought of if someone was to attack me. I now know I have a fighting chance and am more than capable of protecting myself from anyone. Muay Thai has greatly played a role in helping me find my inner happiness and strength. Master Garcia is not only a great leader, but he has created an atmosphere so welcoming. Everybody that walks in the door is soon to be family to the gym. Training is very serious, but there is this sense of no judgment and lightheartedness at Garcia’s Muay Thai Gym. I couldn’t imagine life without the art of muay thai and I couldn’t imagine training with another Master!
Thank you Master Garcia!
The last two months, I’ve been attending classes almost nonstop, plus working out at home on weekends as instructed. I’ve also shifted my eating habits, learning what different types of foods do for my body, and in the last two months, I’ve lost over 20 lbs. After a long year of dealing with the worst my depression and anxiety had to offer, and realizing my antidepressants has caused significant weight gain (a nice little fact my doctors failed to mention), causing my already low self-esteem and self-image to drop even further, this has been a huge change and a reprieve.
Joining the program has helped physically, but more importantly, it’s helped me mentally and emotionally. I’m not often in such a supportive and focused environment; teachers and students alike care for each other’s success and well-being here. I’ve always been embarrassed about the way I look for a lot of reasons, but in class, it doesn’t matter. I’ve learned it’s more important to get both feet through the door and to keep going. Unlike all my past education in any field, there’s no threat of failure. The only thing you can do is improve, no matter how slow.
I still have a lot to work through, but these classes — and this community — have granted me a tangible change. For me, having clear evidence is incredibly helpful. I have fewer headaches, fewer body pains, my anxiety attacks are shorter and fewer… and I can climb up the stairs without getting out of breath. Having these concrete results gives me ammunition against the irrational feelings and thoughts, and helps me keep from equating my self-worth with how well I do or don’t do. Not having grades associated with it helps; your own individual progress matters more than “passing”.
We have students of every age and every walk of life, and there’s always a way to learn more and to become better without the fear of being judged. I am very glad to have met everyone and to be a part of this experience. There’s still a long way to go towards my goal but seeing that it’s possible to make these changes is a huge step forward. Thank you, Master Garcia, for welcoming me and for training me.
Been training here for over a year and have gotten progressively more into the martial art as a result of my experiences here. Other than being an amazing place to train and get in shape, the instructor, Master Garcia is one of a kind. He is one of the few certified Masters that will bring you to the next level whether it be for competition or fitness. It’s a friendly environment, and a serious one. Come try a class and see what you think.
With my first pregnancy last year, I gained 40 pounds. After having my baby boy I lost 20 pounds and was struggling trying to loose the rest of my extra weight. Nine months have passed and I decided to join the Body Transformation Program from Master Garcia. With this program I not only lost 23 pounds in 8 weeks, but also learned a new lifestyle based on commitment, hard working and eating clean, that I will follow it for now on. Big thanks to Master Garcia that believed in me and kept me motivated throughout the program. I’m very happy with my results. I feel great; more energized and most importantly I feel healthier. I’m still working to loose 15 more pounds, but now I know I can do it!
Garcia Muay Thai is a great place to only learn the true art of Muay Thai, it is also a wonderful way to get back into shape. The 9 weeks that i have been going, i have learned excellent fighting techniques, lost 14lbs and most importantly have met wonderful people. Master Tony takes incredible care and interest in every student from beginner to advanced. Give it a try and you’ll be hooked.
My favorite workout anywhere! Master Garcia at Garcia Muay Thai is the most knowledgable Muay Thai instructor in the Tri-State area. He frequently trains in Thailand to hone his martial art skills and is always bringing something new to class. Whether you are a beginner who has never put on gloves, or an experienced MMA fighter, Master Garcia can effectively run a class that incorporates all levels. Most importantly, the time flies by because his classes are so fun, I’m drenched in sweat, and I’ve gotten a great workout in the process.
I have been training at Garcia Muay Thai for six months. It has been an incredible experience. Master Garcia is both knowledgable and approachable; he is always willing to take the time to help you improve your technique and push you to be better. You are never doing the same thing two sessions in a row. Master Garcia is constantly adding new elements to your workout so nothing becomes routine and you are left eagerly looking forward to the new things you learn every session. The environment at the gym is also conducive to learning. No one is looking to kick your head off but instead everyone is there to challenge and learn with you. The people here are warm and friendly, which is not what I was expecting at a martial arts facility. I recently turned 30 and I am easily in the best shape of my life. I lost 10 pounds and I have been able to maintain a healthy weight. My strength, flexibility, and endurance have improved much more in the six months of training at Garcia Muay Thai, than in years of lifting weights, practicing yoga, and running largely on my own. Furthermore, taking the journey of learning the art of Muay Thai has been incredibly fun and rewarding. I highly recommend Garcia Muay Thai to anyone.
For the past year, I have been training at Garcia Muay Thai Gym in Roslyn. Master Garcia teaches traditional Muay Thai while also providing an incredible workout. He generously shares years of knowledge and skill through his own training techniques. In addition, he helps his students develop skills at their own pace, observes them and guides them to improve while training in a safe and encouraging environment. Thanks to Master Garcia, I have improved my endurance level, sharpened my skills, and increased my self-confidence. Master Garcia is calm, patient and encouraging, which is the reason for the supportive environment in his dojo. This environment lends itself to an enriched learning and fitness experience. The best reason to go to this school is to learn from one of the finest Muay Thai instructors, Master Garcia.
By far the best Martial Arts school anywhere, not only is Muay Thai taught, but you can get training in Sambo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from the hands of world champions. Master Garcia will not only help you in technique, stamina and resistance but he will help you make a lifestyle change by guiding your nutritional habits and creating a personalize meal plan for you to reach your goals. One on one, and with incredible patient he will teach how, what and when to eat what you like and most. Moreover, he will teach you why is that the meal plan works. I’m 5’3 and started with 155lbs and in about 3 months I was able to cut down to 135lbs =) and maintain it!!. There’s plenty of equipment for everybody, including a ring for students to practice on. The support that you get from the Garcia Family is genuine and uplifting.
I have been coming to Garcia Muay Thai for 2 years. As a Registered Dietitian, I know the importance of exercise for weight management. Going to classes just 2 times a week, I have achieved gradual weight loss without any change in diet.
I was surprised at how my tolerance increased for the classes which are all high intensity workouts. Master Garcia helps everyone to reach their best potential and takes time to work individually with everyone. I had tried another school for Kick boxing for a short time before this but the classes were so large. Everyone in the gym encourages, motivates and challenges each other. It is always a great workout.
I plan to continue to work on my weight management and fitness goals.
My son who is disabled also takes classes. He has benefited from the classes tremendously with increased self confidence, improved mood and overall improved physical health.
