I’ve struggled with my weight for the majority of my adult life as well as when I was a child and teen. As a sales professional, I became comfortable living a sedentary lifestyle. I was a drinker and a smoker. Part of my job was to entertain clients which had me eating out a few times a week. At one point I was tipping the scales at just north of 240 lbs. As a result, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Even though I was doing a decent job managing my disease, I still suffered a heart attack at the ripe old age of 43. I rushed to the hospital (thank God I live a few blocks away) and long story short I received 5 stents. This is where Master Tony Garcia and Garcia Muay Thai come into the picture. The day I left the hospital I drove to the gym and joined. I was always intrigued and wanted to learn a martial art in addition to needing a cardio-centric workout that would get me in shape. Master Garcia took the time to talk about my condition as well as my goals and we put together a plan. Through conditioning classes my overall fitness improved dramatically. But as stated before I wasn’t only interested in getting in shape; I wanted to learn the art of Muay Thai. Through private sessions and Master Garcia’s Fighter Course I’ve learned a ton and participate in sparring sessions weekly. About four years ago I found Garcia Muay Thai gym. I was nineteen and severely depressed. I was scared as well. I was scared that someone would attack me and I wouldn’t know how to defend myself. Carrying a weapon was no choice. I don’t think I can ever live with myself if I was to stab someone or shoot someone. My father actually found a voucher online for Garcia Muay Thai and bought me sessions. It took me weeks before I actually made my way there. I was depressed and felt small of a being, in a sense I felt lost and undeserving of happiness. I remember walking into the gym and being the only female and the youngest and smallest one there! I thought I was in the wrong place. Man, was I wrong. I was exactly where I needed to be. Since it was my first time doing any kind of martial arts, Master Garcia worked with me at my own pace. He showed me the basics and fundamentals. He guided me through and pushed me to my potential each and every day I went. Not only did I feel empowered but, with each training completed, I felt this natural high of bliss. I was no longer scared of the thought of if someone was to attack me. I now know I have a fighting chance and am more than capable of protecting myself from anyone. Muay Thai has greatly played a role in helping me find my inner happiness and strength. The last two months, I’ve been attending classes almost nonstop, plus working out at home on weekends as instructed. I’ve also shifted my eating habits, learning what different types of foods do for my body, and in the last two months, I’ve lost over 20 lbs. After a long year of dealing with the worst my depression and anxiety had to offer, and realizing my antidepressants has caused significant weight gain (a nice little fact my doctors failed to mention), causing my already low self-esteem and self-image to drop even further, this has been a huge change and a reprieve.
Joining the program has helped physically, but more importantly, it’s helped me mentally and emotionally. I’m not often in such a supportive and focused environment; teachers and students alike care for each other’s success and well-being here. I’ve always been embarrassed about the way I look for a lot of reasons, but in class, it doesn’t matter. I’ve learned it’s more important to get both feet through the door and to keep going. Unlike all my past education in any field, there’s no threat of failure. The only thing you can do is improve, no matter how slow.
I still have a lot to work through, but these classes — and this community — have granted me a tangible change. For me, having clear evidence is incredibly helpful. I have fewer headaches, fewer body pains, my anxiety attacks are shorter and fewer… and I can climb up the stairs without getting out of breath. Having these concrete results gives me ammunition against the irrational feelings and thoughts, and helps me keep from equating my self-worth with how well I do or don’t do. Not having grades associated with it helps; your own individual progress matters more than “passing”.
We have students of every age and every walk of life, and there’s always a way to learn more and to become better without the fear of being judged. I am very glad to have met everyone and to be a part of this experience. There’s still a long way to go towards my goal but seeing that it’s possible to make these changes is a huge step forward. With my first pregnancy last year, I gained 40 pounds. After having my baby boy I lost 20 pounds and was struggling trying to loose the rest of my extra weight. He frequently trains in Thailand to hone his martial art skills and is always bringing something new to class. I have been training at Garcia Muay Thai for six months. It has been an incredible experience. Master Garcia is both knowledgable and approachable; he is always willing to take the time to help you improve your technique and push you to be better. You are never doing the same thing two sessions in a row.
